SUMMARY:First Friday Art Trail – Featuring Atlas Passmore
DESCRIPTION:Date: Friday\, April 10\, 2025Time: 12:00 PM – 4:00 PMLocation: Vernon Public Art Gallery\, 3228 31st Ave\, Downtown VernonAdmission: Free | Everyone welcome \n\n\n\nPlease note\, this session will be held one week later than usual due to the April holidays. \n\n\n\nAs part of Greater Vernon’s First Friday Art Trail\, the Vernon Public Art Gallery is pleased to host local artist Atlas Passmore for an open studio experience. Visitors are invited to drop in throughout the day to meet Atlas\, learn about their creative process\, and see their artwork in progress. \n\n\n\nAbout the ArtistAtlas is a contemporary abstract artist living and working in Vernon\, BC. Their work explores light\, emotion\, and persistence through layered texture and luminous colour- not representations of specific places\, but inner landscapes shaped by memory\, experience\, and survival. Beginning as a form of emotional processing\, their practice remains an outlet for Big Feelings\, built intuitively through scraping\, layering\, and return. The light in their work is not about serenity. It is about refusal. A reminder of presence. A declaration: something tender can still take up space. \n\n\n\nDiscover more about the First Friday Art Trail and explore participating artists across Greater Vernon — or get involved as a featured artist at VPAG.Learn More / Apply to Be a Featured Artist

SUMMARY:First Friday Art Trail — Featuring Sarah Hope
DESCRIPTION:Date: Friday\, February 6\, 2025Time: 11:00 AM – 3:00 PMLocation: Vernon Public Art Gallery\, 3228 31st Ave\, Downtown VernonAdmission: Free | Everyone welcome \n\n\n\nAs part of Greater Vernon’s First Friday Art Trail\, the Vernon Public Art Gallery is pleased to host local artist Sarah Hope for an open studio experience. Visitors are invited to drop in throughout the day to meet Sarah\, learn about her creative process\, and see her artwork in progress. \n\n\n\nAbout the ArtistSarah Hope is an autistic artist whose work is quite diverse\, spanning from watercolour and oil paintings to hand dyed and handmade paper installations. Her themes have also traversed from the beauty of impermanence\, grief and death\, to women and neurodivergent researchers\, to biodiversity and pollinators. Much of her artwork combines foraged and handmade materials with video\, sound and lights to create immersive experiences. She also combines pigments made from rock and bone with traditional watercolour paint\, creating paintings of local hummingbirds and owls that she photographs near her home. She has been extensively researching and creating with the under-represented mediums of handmade paper\, natural dyes\, and artist-made colour for many years. These multi-step processes are old crafts that align with her natural deep focus. Grinding rocks for colour or shredding plant fibres for paper both appeal to her needs to move the body and align with striving towards a sustainable art practice. By making slow art\, she finds there is space created to process emotionally\, which then transfers to the final work. Being recently diagnosed\, she is still processing how her autistic traits such as sensory sensitivity and attention to detail have been instrumental in her art. Sarah has a diploma of Fine Arts and in 2023\, she spent 6 weeks learning about the craft of fine paper at Penland School of Craft\, North Carolina. With support from Canada Council for the Arts and BC Arts Council\, she has presented her work in various galleries as solo and group exhibitions. In 2019 Sarah won the Marie Manson Art award which launched her interest in artist-made palettes. Sarah is a settler born and raised in Tkemlúps\, (Kamloops)\, and works on the traditional lands Switzmalph te Secwepémc\, (Salmon Arm). \n\n\n\n\n \n Sarah Hope’s Instagram \n\n\n\n\n \n Artist Website \n\n\n\nDiscover more about the First Friday Art Trail and explore participating artists across Greater Vernon — or get involved as a featured artist at VPAG.Learn More / Apply to Be a Featured Artist

SUMMARY:Artist Talk: Samuel Roy-Bois
DESCRIPTION:Date: Saturday\, January 24\, 2026Time: 1:00 – 2:00 PMLocation: Vernon Public Art Gallery \n\n\n\nThe Vernon Public Art Gallery is pleased to present Kitchen Corner\, a new exhibition by award-winning artist and Associate Professor at the University of British Columbia Okanagan\, Samuel Roy-Bois. The exhibition will be on view at the Vernon Public Art Gallery from January 9 to March 11\, 2026. \n\n\n\nBorn in Québec City\, Roy-Bois is known nationally and internationally for his ambitious installations that explore architecture\, everyday materials\, and the environments we shape. His work has been featured at major institutions including the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal\, the Audain Art Museum\, and the Esker Foundation\, and is held in numerous Canadian collections. \n\n\n\nThe sculptures in Kitchen Corner resemble the exposed framing of buildings; supports\, joints\, and partial structures that suggest spaces still being built. Using familiar materials and forms\, the works reflect the environments we inhabit every day and encourage viewers to notice how these structures influence how we move through and understand the world around us. \n\n\n\nAn artist talk with Samuel Roy-Bois will be held on Saturday\, January 24\, from 1–2 PM\, offering visitors a unique opportunity to hear directly from the artist about his practice and the ideas behind Kitchen Corner. \n\n\n\nDon’t miss this opportunity to engage with the work of award-winning Canadian artist Samuel Roy-Bois and experience Kitchen Corner at the Vernon Public Art Gallery. Entry is by donation.

SUMMARY:Kitchen Corner
DESCRIPTION:Samuel Roy-Bois\n\n\n\nTopham Brown Memorial GalleryJanuary 8\, 2026 to March 11\, 2026 \n\n\n\nOpening Reception: Thursday\, January 8\, from 6–8 PMArtist Talk: Saturday\, January 24\, from 1-2 PM \n\n\n\n\n \n Exhibition Publication \n\n\n\nKitchen Corner is the title of a Depression-era photograph by Walker Evans. While not adirect source for the works assembled here\, its rediscovery during the preparation of thisexhibition proved resonant. Evans’s image operates as a portrait of a context articulatedthrough objects. Documentary in nature\, it renders a modest interior where things—a frayedrag\, a slanted broom\, a patinated chair—assume the status of characters seemingly asking tobe observed\, “objects in a moment of pause between use.”1 What is striking\, however\, isthat Kitchen Corner withholds the very signifiers conventionally associated with a kitchen(no sink\, no stove). In this disjunction between title and referent\, the photograph underscoresthe complexity of representation and the capacity of objects to exceed their functionalidentity. \n\n\n\nThe works in this exhibition similarly dwell in thresholds of recognition. They positionobjects\, sculptures\, and bodies in states of indeterminacy: what reads as structure functions assupport; what appears fragmentary gestures toward wholeness; what suggests immediacyproves resistant\, even opaque. Produced over the course of eighteen months\, these workswere not initially conceived as a unified installation. Their subsequent convergence\, however\,revealed affinities of form and sensibility\, generating conditions for thought and affect thatexceed the sum of individual pieces. \n\n\n\nThe works composing this exhibition invite tension into the domain of the built environment. Each references architecture obliquely: through the evocation of house foundations\, theabstracted language of the maquette\, or vestiges of timber-frame construction. Despite theirvaried scales and spatial logics\, they converge around a shared problematic: the negotiationbetween the self and the possible. In their oscillation between recognition and estrangement\,they foreground the contingencies of agency and the fragility of ideals. Failure\, unfulfillment\,and speculation emerge not as deficiencies but as constitutive modes of experience\, openingonto a broader meditation on how subjectivity is continually shaped\, unsettled\, and redefinedthrough material encounter. \n\n\n\n1 Richon\, Olivier. SUMMARY:First Friday Art Trail — Featuring Kel Taylor
DESCRIPTION:Date: Friday\, December 5\, 2025Time: 10:00 AM – 12:00 PMLocation: Vernon Public Art Gallery\, 3228 31st Ave\, Downtown VernonAdmission: Free | Everyone welcome \n\n\n\nAs part of Greater Vernon’s First Friday Art Trail\, the Vernon Public Art Gallery is pleased to host local artist Kel Taylor for an open studio experience. Visitors are invited to drop in throughout the day to meet Kel\, learn about her creative process\, and see her artwork in progress. \n\n\n\n\nAbout the ArtistKel Taylor Contemporary Figurative Artist Artist Biography Kel Taylor was born and raised on the unceded traditional and ancestral territory of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam)\, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish)\, and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. She spent most of her adult life on the east coast of Canada before returning to B.C. to live on the unceded traditional and ancestral territory of the Syilx Okanagan People. Her formal art training began with an Occupational Therapy degree\, but it was not until 2017 that she began to study drawing and painting both in the UK and Canada. Kel works with acrylic and mixed media\, usually on cradled wood panels and with a variety of tools\, to explore the mark making needed to tell her stories. Although the initial driver was to understand and integrate on a personal level\, Kel now finds that sharing her stories provides the fuel. Kel believes that finding common ground\, remembering that we are in this together\, is critical now more than ever in a world that can feel so divisive and defended. We need to come home to ourselves\, and each other\, and art has a powerful role to play. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n Artist Website \n\n\n\n\nDiscover more about the First Friday Art Trail and explore participating artists across Greater Vernon — or get involved as a featured artist at VPAG.Learn More / Apply to Be a Featured Artist
