The Vernon Public Art Gallery will host the traveling component of the UBC Okanagan 2010 BFA graduation exhibition titled INTUIT. The exhibition is the creation of twenty-eight former students of the university’s Fine Arts program and features a diversity of media, including large-scale paintings and drawings, sculptural installations, printmaking and video. The artwork reflects a multi-faceted approach to art-making ranging from abstract to representational that addresses the issues of contemporary culture in general. The artists’ work in the exhibition references tendencies, concepts and strategies that are prevalent in contemporary art-making.

GLENN CLARK: IN SEARCH OF THE PICTURESQUE
Glenn Clark, Okanagan Lake, 2010
Glenn Clark, a Penticton-based artist, will present a selection of paintings from an ongoing investigation of the BC landscape in the exhibition titled In the Search of Picturesque. The main concept of this exhibition is focused on Clark’s two distinct approaches to landscape representation. He will present highly realistic landscape renderings realized in four large paintings produced in his studio. These large paintings in the exhibition will be complemented by a display of numerous small-scale paintings produced alla prima directly on various sites throughout BC.

KATIE BELCHER: HOUSESCAPE

Katie Belcher, a Halifax NS-based emerging artist, will produce a large-scale drawing that will be drawn in graphite directly on the Gallery walls. Her exhibition titled Housescape is an ongoing investigation of familiar environments created mostly from memories of the past that explore the issues of identity in general.

This group exhibition brings together artists that have been involved in art projects developed and administered by art teaches working for the Kindale Developmental Association. The title of the exhibition, Reduce Reuse Recycle, expresses the environmental awareness of the artists involved and their desire to help the environment through recycling. Most of the artwork in the exhibition was produced from mostly recycled materials.

ONE PLANET
Topham Brown Gallery
March 18 - May 20
Jim Kalnin, Oyama Okanagan-based senior artist produced a body of paintings titled One Planet in which he explores relationships of humans and the natural and urban environments. Based on his direct experiences with Canadian outdoors, the imagery are enhanced by the incorporation of surrealistic urban elements that address the issues of natural environment degradation. Despite the environmental concerns, the work also carries the undertone and possibility of the harmonized coexistence of humanity and nature.

The artwork in the exhibition Art from the Heart produced by the students from elementary schools in the School District #22 often delights the viewers with their creations produced under the guidance of their art teachers. The students often portray the ‘world’ that surrounds them, or, in other cases, they reference directly their experiences through the language of visual forms. The uninhibited approach to their artmaking reflects the students’ natural inclination for a need to communicate.

Art and Soul, the exhibition of artwork created by the students from the secondary schools in the School District #22, displays a maturity of handling various media and, more importantly, demonstrates a strong conceptual thinking. The works are often communicating important messages referencing ecological and political concerns, or matters of relationships and daily lives.
